  EXTENSION SERVICE UNITS

NATIONAL SERVICE SCHEME

“Service to humanity is service to God.”A few units clubbed together to organise certain important issues in society like Alzhimers and Legal Awareness. On 21st September 2013, The NSS unit of the college in association with ARDSI organized an awareness programme on Alzheimer’s disease. Dr.R.Sathianathan, the famous psychiatrist was the chief guest and delivered the key note address. The students gave talk about dementia in Tamil and English. The students also presented a skit in English and a mime explaining about dementia. “Legal Awareness Programme” for college students on 21st August 2013 in association with Tamil Nadu State Legal Services Authority and District Legal Services Authority in SJH. Mrs.A.Kayalvizhi and Mr.G.Palaniyappan Judicial officers delivered a lecture on Women-Rights and Role of Legal Services. Mrs.Selvi, Advocate discussed about the violence against women in the society and what are the laws used against violence. Mrs.Girija Kumar Babu, social worker gave awareness to the students, problem faced by women’s in the society.

The NSS activity for the academic year 2013-14, commenced with “Awareness programme on silk mark” in association with Silk Mark Organization of India on 8th August 2013. “Chennai turns Pink”, an awareness programme on breast cancer in association with West Cancer Research Foundation. NSS volunteers of the college participated in various competitions organized to- celebrate the 150th birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda at The University of Madras on -31-08-13. The NSS unit of Valliammal College, Quaid-E-Millath and Ethiraj College in association with Scope Beauty Lankmark organized an awareness rally on breast cancer and Madras School of Social Sciences in association with the NSS unit of the college organized an awareness rally on Young Women Abuse at The Marina Beach on 7th September 2013 and 28th September 2013 respectively. On 26th September awareness programme on voting was conducted in the college campus. The NSS volunteers cleaned the campus and insisted the students to say no to plastic on the NSS day of the college on 24th September 2013. In association with ARDSI, the NSS unit of the college organized an awareness programme on Alzheimer’s disease and with Apollo Health and Lifestyle Hospital organized an awareness programme on cervical cancer and asthma and allergy-myths and facts on 10th October 2013. The Nss volunteers of the college assisted the medical team. The Corporation of Chennai in a 5-day mega medical camp organized by Govt of TN. Ms.B.Thirupurasundari, NSS programme officer of our college attented the 7 days orientation course organized by the The University of Madras at the Empanelled Training Institution, MSSW.

The NSS unit of the college collected and donated nearly 8 bags of rice to Divine Hope for the Disable India, porur on 18th December 2013. The NSS unit welcomed the Vivekananda Ratha on 1st January 2014 in the college campus as a part of his 150th birth anniversary celebration.

YRC ACTIVITIES:
The activities were coordinated well by the coordinators Ms.Padmini and Ms.Deepa who had taken charge of YRC activities for the year 2013-14. The YRC unit organized “Legal Awareness Programme” for college students on 31st August 2013 in association with Tamil Nadu State Legal Services Authority and District Legal Services Authority. 21st September 2013 being the World Alzheimer`s day YRC unit organized an awareness programme on Alzheimer`s disease along with ARDSI.

ROTARACT ACTIVITIES:
The activities for the academic year started with the installation programme as the Rotarians of the Rotary club of Annanagar had participated in the function. Our students Ms.Revathy, Ms.Kompella Priyanka, Ms.Mahalakshmi kumar, Ms.Sanga praba and Ms.Pooja Khandelwal conducted an outreach programme on enhancing the communication skills of students in the school Kalaimagal Vidayala on August 21, 2013. The Rotaract club organized “Legal Awareness programme” for college students on 21st August 2013 in association with Tamilnadu State Legal Services Authority and District Legal Services Authority. 21st September 2013 being the World Alzheimer`s day the Rotaract club organized an awareness programme on Alzheimer`s disease. The students presented a skit and mime about Alzheimer`s disease.

RRC ACTIVITIES:
The awareness on “Well being” a free consultation programme in association with CIPLA pharmaceuticals on Skin, Hair and Nail was conducted on 20.01.2014. About 150 RRC volunteers participated in it. Dr.Vanathi from Stanley Medical College provided free consultation on Hair, Skin and Nail to students as well as staff members.

ECO CLUB:
The Eco Club most consciously feels that it is our duty to preserve the withering ecology of Planet Earth. Eco Club volunteers participated in various competitions conducted by Tamilnadu Government Dental College and Hospital on Environment Day celebration “Save the Earth” on 19th and 20th June 2013. Our volunteers won the 1st prize in photography, 2nd prize in Rangoli and Collage.

Eco club organized an awareness programme on “Stress and Depression”, in association with Sarayu Medical Centre, on 28th January 2013. The doctors of Sarayu Medical Centre, Dr.Nappinai and Dr.Arun Prasad, highlighted the points on how to overcome stress and depression, which is the need of hour for the student community in the present world.

 
 
YRC(Youth Red Cross)
Youth Red Cross unite of valliammal college for women had a remarkable beginning in the year 2004 and is continuing the service with 750 volunteers.
 YRC is the oldest international humanitarian organization promoting peace and brotherhood.

Human chain
To create awareness on the conservation of electricity, the YRC wing of our college along with TNEB, Anna Nagar participated in a human chain on Dec 15, 2010.
 
Visit to Old Age Home
The volunteers of YRC unit visited S.V.Home for the aged. Contribution was collected from the volunteers, staff and student of our institutions.
 
Youth programme
Whirlpool Company organized an international programme of colleting old clothes, accessories for the poor children all over the country. Volunteers of YRC and student of Valliammal College contributed old clothes and accessories in aid of this programme.

 
 
 
Rotaract Club
Rotaract provides a platform for the youth to enhance the knowledge and skills that assist them in personal development, to address the physical and social needs of their communities and to promote better relationship between people.
 
Installation
 The installation of Retract Club for 2010-11 was held on the 21st September. The chief Guest for the occasion was Ms.indirani Raj Durai and Rtn.V.S.Venkateshan presided over the installation ceremony.
 
Special Health Camp
A special health camp was organized for faculty members on 4th September 2010 in the SJH Hall by the Rotaract club. A medical team from the “RG stone Urology and Laparoscopy Hospital” conducted test especially for the detecting of the Gall Bladder Stone and Kidney stone. Our faculty members were benefited our of this camp.
 
 
 
NSS(National Service Scheme)
Slum survey programme

The NSS unit started its activity for the academic year 2010 -11 by participating in the slum survey training was given to NSS volunteers by eminent professors from university of madras.
 
NSS unit contacted pencil sketching competition in the month of august. Around 50 students participated and won prizes.
 
NSS volunteers collected more than 3000 books and contributed for the newly constructed library of university of madras.
 
Street play was conducted on the topic “Aids Awareness” in association with TANSACS in the month of august. Seminar on “Aids Awareness” was also conducted by the NSS Unit.
 
A Breast cancer Awareness Camp was organized in association with west cancer Trust.
 
A special lecture was organized on the topic “street management and pranic healing” on 21st October, 2010. The lecture was delivered by Col.
Venkataraman.
 
NSS Volunteers Collected 150 kilos of rice, stationery, clothes, biscuits, essential commodities in aid of special children of “Mitra” in February, 2011 and also attended in aid an Organ and Body part donation awareness camp.
 
 
 
RRC(Red Ribbon Club)
The Red Ribbon club of valliammal joined hands with TANSACS in organizing state level youth carnival “ILAVATTAM” on August 2nd, 2010. As a part of this, a cultural program for aids awareness “celebrating life” was held on December 8th, 2010 in collaboration with Tamil Nadu Aids control society.

 
 
 
ECO(Environmental Club)
In the academic year 2010-2011, ECO club is more focused on the “Go Green” concept.

The volunteers of the ECO club have put their hands together and worked for the cleanliness of the campus. The club has also distributed saplings to the student to keep the campus green. The club conducted an awareness programme on the “Hazardous Usage of plastic and Non-Biodegradable Materials” among the student of the college.
